We're thrilled to let you know that a great video has been posted to YouTube showing the Alchemical Fire Circle, with voiceover by Jeff McBride explaining how the dancing is analogous to the orbits of the planets.

If you've been wondering about what we'll be doing at Fires Rising at Four Quarters Farm in a few weeks, take a look at this, and then pass the word! The video is from a documentary produced by Vision TV about Jeff's magic profession and his work with alchemical fire circle with Abbi. You'll see many familiar faces here.... We hope you will enjoy and want to put out huge thanks to the Four Quarters office guy Micheal for putting this together!
Reston or Herndon area ideal.
I'd like to get together on three dates and briefly interview you about your home country, the adjustment to the US, and other insights you have on the immigrant experience. The meetings can be brief (15 minutes) or we can hang out, schedules allowing.

Friday January 12
220 N. Washington

Doors: 7 PM
Showtime 9 PM
Tickets: $20
Genre: 80's Rock & Roll

Dressed in leather, brandishing heavy guitars, and an unabashed fetish for British
Invasion pop, the Smithereens were an anomaly in the American college rock scene
of the late '80s. They came onto the national radar in 1988, and the first single,
"Only a Memory," not only became a college and modern rock hit, but it
crossed over to album-rock stations as well. The Smithereens made their attempt
at big-time album-rock success with their third album, "11". Hiring producer
Ed Stasium brought a heavier guitar sound, which made "A Girl Like You"
a Top 40 hit, sending "11" to gold status, and solidifying their spot
in our memories.

We've got a special show for you this year. It's all Smithereens all night.
The guys will be doing multiple sets: a dozen or so originals from various years
and albums, then the entire "MEET THE SMITHEREENS!" Album (12 SONGS),
then another dozen or so originals, plus a very cool acoustic set. Don't be
late...

Doors open at 7 PM and our very special guest DJ Mellie Mel will start the night
shortly thereafter. You know (or should know) Mellie Mel from Shee-bop and U.B.U.
Mellie Mel will be spinning left of dial, alternative, punk, & new wave. If
you haven't checked her out before, you should do it now.

* What are we facing now as the economy prepares to hit the wall
* What will be the effects of Peak Oil (a geological phenomenon) and
petrocollapse (an economic and social phenomenon) on food supply and
other services we depend on?
* What other mitigation strategies are possible?
* What is the role of the market in determining how severe the
effect of shortage stemming from geological depletion will be ?
* Upon upheaval, deprivation, and a restructuring of social relations
in a "new" local economics system, will we choose to create a
Petrocollapse Conference that there is no technofix for our energy
dilemma. Society will have to bring about a closer level of community and
rediscover what local economics are about."

The May 6th conference will feature Richard Heinberg, the most-read peak
oil author (The Party's Over, and Powerdown). Films and music will be
also offered as part of a varied program to stimulate discussion and action
by attendees. Heinberg and Lundberg and others will perform music
including oil-satire songs. Films will include premiers of "Our Synthetic
Sea" (plastics pollution in oceans) and "The Power of Community: How
Cuba Survived Peak Oil."

Lundberg says the Petrocollapse Conference asks, "What we can do in
advance of the social upheaval and chaos that may produce a 'national
New Orleans,' to prepare or mitigate? What will the future look like during
and after a transition to non-petroleum living?"
Background briefing for:

Petrocollapse Conference: May 6, 2006 9 A.M. - 7 P.M.
All Souls Church, Unitarian 16th & Harvard, Washington D.C.

Most independent oil experts agree that the peak in global oil extraction
is occurring approximately now. The pressures of the market to distribute
the fuels and materials made from petroleum are already creating intense
competition for energy supplies around the world. As the gap between
supply and demand widens and prices skyrocket, supply will tighten as
never before due to hoarding. This will cause massive repercussions in
daily living and the global economy. Not only will people have to adapt to
an energy-poor world by concentrating on sustainably working with their
regional ecosystems for all their needs, but also have to cope with
climate change which is rapidly accelerating. This scenario is referred to
by oil expert and conference organizer Jan Lundberg as Petrocollapse.

As stated in the conference brochure, "the world's peak in oil extraction
is about now -- although there is uncertainty and debate. The pressures of
the Market to smoothly spread around the fuels and materials made from
petroleum promise to create intense competition for energy supplies, as
seen already today on the world stage. As the gap between supply and
demand widens and prices skyrocket, supply will tighten as never before
due to hoarding. This will cause massive repercussions in daily living and
the global economy. Not only will people have to adapt to an energy-poor
world by concentrating on sustainably working with their regional
ecosystems for all their needs, climate change is accelerating."

Richard Heinberg presents irrefutable evidence in his books and
powerpoint presentations that the world's maximum oil extraction has
most likely been reached. He also shows what limited contributions can be
offered by various countries to increase their oil output, and what
alternative sources of energy can possibly provide to replace petroleum.
Besides his solutions of "powerdown" and "lifeboats," Heinberg promotes
the Oil Depletion Protocol proposed by Colin Campbell, the geologist who
founded the international Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas.

Speakers will include:

DC PETROCOLLAPSE CONFERENCE SPEAKERS WILL INCLUDE:
Albert Bates Global Ecovillage Network; author
Diana Leafe Christian Communities Magazine
John Darnell, Ph.D Energy advisor
Richard Heinberg Author, The Party's Over and Powerdown

I'm really wanting to target the what I call "the mom market" because I know that mothers, especially those with young children, desperately need some extra help around the house. It being the beginning of my journey into this new business I can assure you that this gives a great opportunity to have quality, no hassle cleaning done at rates that will fit into your specific budget. My goal is to continue to provide a cleaning service that will always conform to meet the needs of my valued clients.
Mark Phillips is hosting a nationwide wine special called "Enjoying Wine with Mark Phillips" that will air on public television in March, 2006. The Wine Tasting Association (WTA) has created this show to change the approach to wine in America. Every wine show that has ever been on TV has failed. It's true. That's because the shows have been boring....showing vineyards, barrels and talking about how wine is made. Mark's approach to wine is different. He wants to make learning about wine fun and give viewers a practical approach to understanding wine. This has been the mission of WTA since it's inception in 1990. It has proven successful in the Washington area and now it's time to take the show on the road.

This show will be a groundbreaking effort, one that will forever change the way wine is presented and appreciated. WTA invites you to be a part of this unprecedented venture. Your contribution will not only permanently associate you with a "first" in wine programming but you'll be able to look back years from now and know that you helped get started the national movement that will make wine more approachable and enjoyable for consumers across America. You can help in two ways.

1. Be a part of the audience. The show is being taped in front of a live audience on Tuesday, November 1 at the PBS affiliate station in Richmond, VA from 6:30pm - 9:30pm. Free wine and tons of fun. Audience members get lots of face time so here's your chance for your friends and family around the nation to see you on TV. Bring your friends. Bus loads welcome. The key thing here is if you RSVP to attend, it is important that you do so. Empty seats are bad news. To RSVP, send the names of everyone in your party to markp@winetasting.org Directions will be sent to you after you RSVP.

2. Support the show financially. "Enjoying Wine with Mark Phillips" costs a lot to produce and we would love to have your support in this effort to launch a whole new movement of wine education. There are two levels of support:

Sipper: For a $50 donation, you will receive an autographed DVD of the show plus bonus material that the home TV audience will never see. This DVD will be made available through public television when the show airs $90 or higher so this is quite the deal. The DVD will be shipped to you in April, 2006.

Swallower: For a $500 donation, you get the DVD plus a wine tasting for up to 20 people at your home or office led by Mark. The tasting must be in 2006 and the location must be within 30 minutes of the 495 Beltway. A mutually agreed upon date will be worked out. The format is Mark's Overview of Wine talk, a 90 minute lively presentation covering everything you need to know about wine. Mark will select four wines to taste during the talk.

To be a Sipper or Swallower, visit the WTA website at www.winetasting.org

Evoking images of luxury, fine dining, and romantic destinations, train travel has a mystique all its own. But the tradition didn’t begin so elegantly! Travel the rails with James D. Porterfield, popular author and railroad historian, as he gives a lively presentation on America’s rail-cuisine evolution, from its rustic beginnings in the 1830s to today.

Afterwards, dine upon authentic rail fare prepared by special guest chef Warren C. McLeod, who re-creates recipes featured in Porterfield’s books, Dining by Rail and From the Dining Car.

it discusses "dillon's law" which grants that the state government can override local municipal governments. i'm surprised to see a republican touting such a thing, but we do live in some wacky times.

RANT START
One of my BIGGEST pet peeves is folks who go shopping, take their cart out to their car and just 'leave' it there. Not put in the cart corral, not take it back to the store, just leave it there in the parking lot blocking someone elses car.

Today, this lady with her kid walks out of the store with cart, takes her stuff out and pushes it in front of the doors, blocking the way in. I say outloud 'That lady should TAKE the cart back where it belongs'. The lady says to the child...'that lady is a nasty person' and walks on. I look at this lady and call her 'LAAAZZZYYY'.

At this point the child looks up and the mother says 'that person is crazy, ignore her'. I say outloud again 'you are setting a horrid example for your child with your LAZZYYNESS'. Meanwhile, the child throws his candy wrapper on the ground and continues walking.

Seriously...what is SO HARD about returning a shopping cart or walking it to the cart corral so it is out of the way. Honestly...the people that do this NEED the extra exercise.

RANT OFF.

Monticello might as well be on fire - Jefferson's certainly turning in his grave right about now.

The republican majority in the senate has decided to break the rules of the senate so they can get what they want - unquestioning confirmation of bush's judicial nominees. Seems they think "advice and consent of the senate" means "advice to approve; consent for all!" to ensure this, they want to put an end to the filibustering of judicial nominees.

Many of the older members of the (R) caucus, having experienced life in the minority party, understand what eliminating the filibuster will mean to the rights of minority representation, as well as the very nature of the senate and its role in our government. eliminating the filibuster will effectively reduce the senate to another house of representatives, where the minority opinion basically has no rights or sway.

blahblahblahblah...when is she going to get to the point about Warner and VA, you ask?

warner is, thankfully, one of the above mentioned senators - he has enough understanding of and respect for the Senate as an institution to grasp what this power grab will mean to the senate and our government in the long-term, i.e. trash our delicate system of checks and balances that prevents one party or individual from amassing too much power. so warner could well be a deciding vote in all of this.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/5/20/10116/6083

the separation of powers so carefully drafted by our founding fathers in the constitution is entirely dependent on a handful of (R) senators standing up to the pressure of the GOP machine and protecting the use of the filibuster.

to say we are on the brink of a constitutional crisis may sound like hyperbole, but it is very real - the nuclear option compromises the senate's status as a co-equal branch of government and impedes its constitutional obligations to work with the executive branch in providing an independent judiciary.

please, please, please, for the love of god, contact senator warner and implore him to do the right thing. the (R) senators are under tremendous pressure from the party leadership to acquiesce in this. but senators don't work for their parties, they work for we, the people. if they have ever needed to be reminded of that, the time is now.

PLEASE call/fax/email/knock on his senate door...whatever it takes. if you want to make an effort, but haven't the faintest idea what to say, i am happy to help in any way i can. this whole thing goes down on tuesday, so we haven't much time. please share this info with everyone you know - this is one fight that cannot be lost.

thank you for reading this.

In case i'm speaking greek, there is a wealth of background info to be had here:

http://www.dailykos.com/user/uid:1638

and here:

http://www.dailykos.com/user/Kagro%20X

the shorter, much more user-friendly versions can be found in these video clips from the senate floor debate on the nuclear option this week:

http://dembloggers.com

anything from schumer and durbin is well worth the watch. Kerry's speech was also stunning.

the real kicker is the fact that this whole pathetic development is exclusively for the benefit of the rabid religious right. the senate majority leader, sen. frist, is tucked quite firmly inside the pocket of dr. james dobson, mr. spongebob is gay himself.

the end of the filibuster against judicial nominees is the beginning of a theocratic america.
